Choose USB when:
- the server is near a good radio position;
- an extension cable can move the adapter away;
- USB remains stable after restarts;
- you prefer a simple setup without LAN dependency.
The coordinator creates the Zigbee network and handles communication between Home Assistant and devices. USB, LAN and PoE mainly differ in connection, placement flexibility and infrastructure dependencies.
There is no universally best option. Exact adapter compatibility, a stable connection and good radio placement matter more than the connector alone.
USB is simple when the Home Assistant host is near a good radio location, passthrough remains stable after restarts, and the adapter can be moved away from the computer.
Do not place the radio directly beside USB 3.x ports, drives, power supplies or Wi‑Fi access points. ZHA documentation recommends a long shielded extension cable and USB 2.0 port or powered USB 2.0 hub. USB 3.x traffic can interfere with the 2.4 GHz band used by Zigbee.
A network adapter can be placed in a better radio location than the Home Assistant server. Wired Ethernet avoids a physical USB port and USB passthrough into a VM or container.
It still depends on the switch, addressing, power and adapter stability. Keep serial transport on the local wired LAN. ZHA documentation advises against Wi‑Fi, WAN or VPN connections because the serial protocol requires a stable connection.
PoE carries data and power over one Ethernet cable. It can place the coordinator centrally, high up or away from the server without a local power supply.
It requires compatible PoE infrastructure and does not improve radio performance by itself. Its key advantage is flexible mounting with orderly wired power and data.
USB, LAN or PoE alone does not prove compatibility. Verify the exact adapter, chipset, firmware and connection method in current ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT documentation. One coordinator cannot be used by both systems at the same time.

Mains-powered router devices also build coverage. A good coordinator in a good location helps, but cannot automatically fix missing routers, poor topology, interference or faulty devices.
