Matter and Thread in Home Assistant: what are they and are they worth using?

Matter is appearing on more smart home products, and Thread is often mentioned alongside it. They are not two names for the same technology.

Matter is a communication standard for smart home devices. Thread is one of the network transports Matter can use. A Matter device may therefore communicate over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread.

Both can form part of a local Home Assistant installation, but you should understand what a specific device requires before buying it.

Matter is a smart home standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance. Its purpose is to make devices from different manufacturers and platforms work together more easily.

Home Assistant can control a compatible device locally through a Matter Controller without requiring a separate integration for every manufacturer. Matter does not, however, guarantee every feature offered by the manufacturer’s app or a native Home Assistant integration.

Thread is a low-power IPv6-based mesh networking protocol designed in part for smart home devices. Suitable mains-powered devices can relay traffic through the mesh.

Thread is not a replacement for Matter. Thread provides the network transport, while Matter defines device communication at a higher level. A Thread logo alone does not guarantee Matter support.

Matter over Wi-Fi uses your existing Wi-Fi network and does not require Thread. Matter over Thread uses a Thread network and needs access to a working Thread Border Router.

Before buying, check both the Matter logo and the device’s transport. This determines the network infrastructure and hardware you need.

Thread devices operate on their own mesh. A Thread Border Router connects that mesh to the rest of the IP network. It is not a traditional manufacturer hub and does not translate the device protocol into another standard.

A home can have more than one Thread Border Router. This can improve availability when they participate in the same Thread infrastructure, although exact requirements depend on your equipment and network design.

A Matter Controller commissions Matter devices into an ecosystem and manages them. Home Assistant can perform this role.

The official Home Assistant integration uses the Matter Server app. It runs the controller software as a separate process and connects it to Home Assistant through WebSocket.

A Matter Controller and a Thread Border Router are different functions. Some products can perform both roles, but one does not replace the other.

No. Matter and Zigbee can operate alongside each other. If your Zigbee network is stable and provides the functions you need, Matter is not a reason to replace it.

Not always. A compatible device may connect directly to a Matter Controller, but Matter bridges can also expose devices that use another standard.

Existing devices may remain connected to their own bridge, which then makes them available through Matter. The Matter label alone does not describe the product’s complete architecture.

Matter is not necessarily the best integration method for every device. A manufacturer’s native Home Assistant integration may expose more features.

Do not move working devices to Matter automatically just because the manufacturer added support. Compare the functions available through both methods first.

Core Matter control is local and does not require the manufacturer’s cloud. That does not mean every Matter product is completely independent of the internet in every respect.

A vendor may still use an account or cloud service to enable Matter, provide extra features, operate its app or deliver updates. If full internet independence matters, verify the specific product.

Matter is worth considering for new purchases, particularly when local interoperability across ecosystems matters. Do not choose a device based on the logo alone.

Before buying, check:

• whether it uses Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread;
• which functions it exposes through Matter;
• whether Home Assistant supports the required device type and features;
• whether a native integration is better;
• whether you have the required Thread infrastructure;
• whether the product meets the needs of your installation.

Matter is particularly interesting for new devices when you want to reduce dependence on one ecosystem and value local interoperability.

There is no need to replace stable Zigbee, Wi-Fi or other devices simply to give the entire installation a Matter logo. A good Home Assistant system can use several technologies together.
