Tuya in Home Assistant: cloud or local control?

Devices in the Tuya and Smart Life ecosystem are very popular. The same platform covers products from many brands, including sockets, relays, lights, blinds, sensors, thermostats, fans and many other devices.

Home Assistant can integrate Tuya devices in different ways. The official Tuya integration is the simplest route, while other solutions allow compatible devices to be controlled locally.

The decision should not be reduced to the idea that local control is always better. What matters is which devices you own, which functions you need and how important independence from internet services is to you.

The official Tuya integration connects devices in a Tuya Smart or Smart Life account to Home Assistant. It is officially supported, uses Tuya cloud services and has the IoT class Cloud Push.

The current setup uses the user code from the app and a QR code scanned in Tuya Smart or Smart Life. For many users, this is the easiest way to start using Tuya devices in Home Assistant.

Its main advantage is simplicity. Devices are added to Tuya Smart or Smart Life, then the account is linked to Home Assistant.

The official integration is a good choice when:

• you want a straightforward setup;
• your devices expose the functions you need;
• dependence on the internet is acceptable;
• there is no specific reason to change the integration method.

Control depends on communication between Home Assistant, the Tuya service and the device. This creates greater dependence on the internet and an external service than direct communication within the local network.

Home Assistant documentation also notes that the Tuya SDK does not expose all functionality available in Smart Life. A device can therefore appear in Home Assistant while some of its capabilities remain unavailable.

Local control means Home Assistant communicates directly with a compatible device over the local network instead of sending every command through the Tuya cloud.

LocalTuya is a custom community integration. It is not the official Tuya integration supplied with Home Assistant.

In a suitable installation, local control may provide:

• less dependence on the internet for day-to-day control;
• communication within the local network;
• access to functions on some devices that are not exposed correctly by the official integration;
• greater control over the integration method.

Not every Tuya device supports local control, and a local integration does not always provide more functions.

Local control may require more knowledge about the device. Depending on the solution, device identifiers, local keys and correct mapping of device functions may be needed.

Some devices are easy to integrate, while others require much more work. Migrating a working installation simply because local control seems better does not always make sense.

There is no single answer for the entire ecosystem. It depends on the device, firmware, integration method and required functions.

If complete independence from the internet is the goal, the behaviour of the specific device must be verified individually. The ability to send a basic command locally does not automatically mean every function is fully independent of the cloud.

If the official integration is stable and provides everything you need, migration is not mandatory.

Local control is worth considering when there is a specific reason:

• you want to reduce internet dependence for day-to-day control;
• the official integration does not expose a required function;
• a local automation architecture is an important requirement;
• you deliberately want to reduce a larger installation’s dependence on external services.

Define the problem or goal first. Choose the integration method afterwards.

The Tuya brand does not define the communication method. The ecosystem includes both Wi-Fi and Zigbee devices.

Zigbee devices require a suitable Zigbee network and should not be treated in the same way as Tuya Wi-Fi. See the guides to ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT and choosing a Zigbee coordinator.

Choose the official integration if simplicity matters and it provides the functions you need.

Consider local control when there is a specific reason to reduce cloud dependence or when you need greater control over a compatible device.

A larger installation does not need one rule for every device. The integration method should follow actual needs and hardware capabilities.

Tuya devices can look similar in the app while behaving very differently at a technical level.
